GONE TO THE MISCHIEF
a feature about women who found a way
A dark comedy inspired by the wave of female mediums that sprung up in the 1850's, when intelligent and resourceful women discovered that although they couldn’t speak on behalf of themselves, they could speak on behalf of the dead. Set in a fast and loose interpretation of Antebellum America, this is the story of a runaway mail order bride, a frustrated inventor, and a miracle healer/drug dealer who team up to conduct séances. Playing the parts of mediums, the three women become activists as they use the voice of the dead to be the voice of social justice, female liberation, and civil rights.
The past is re-imagined to tell the history of defiant women, how they survived, and why we don’t know about them.
